Richard Gregg Shuster of Sparks was selected as Veteran of the Month for October by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). Shuster served in the U. S. Navy and as a civilian has supported numerous military organizations and veterans support groups.
Kat Miller, Director of the NDVS, explained that Veteran of the Month candidates are chosen for their assistance to former veterans, as well as for their support to active duty personnel and to the community. After leaving military service, volunteer work performed for their peers and for those who may be less fortunate speaks to their character, their dedication and their willingness to unselfishly help others.
Individuals who nominated Shuster pointed out his “undying love for veterans and veterans causes," his “unbridled energy" and his work in “educating veterans and politicians on solutions." Shuster has volunteered for many years at the Veterans Guest House in Reno, served as a dedicated member of the Northern Nevada Coalition and has held in a number of positions in the Sierra Nevada Chapter 989 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. His additional support to the community is too voluminous to list here, but was detailed at the award ceremony.
