Michael Evans Recognized as Veteran of the Month, May 2013

Michael Evans was recognized as Nevada’s May Veteran of the Month during a presentation at Las Vegas High School (LVSH) on May 15. Since retiring from the army, Major Evans has served as the Senior Army Instructor at LVHS overseeing the instruction of nearly 6,000 cadets which passed through the JROTC program during his 20 year tenure.

“Major Evans served and defended our country for over 50 years.  He could have chosen another, easier life,” said Deputy Executive Director, Kat Miller. “Instead, he continued to serve his nation by mentoring and guiding thousands of students, helping them to cross the threshold from childhood to living lives as honorable young men and women.”

Through his 20 years as a JROTC instructor, Major Evans encouraged young people toward their future success. His cadets have gone on to finish college, vocational schools and serve in the United States military. He has assisted his cadets with the organization and performance of numerous JROTC competitions, community service programs, color guards and leadership camps which helped his unit receive two Congressional Recognition certificates.

“The one thing that always strikes me, no matter where I go, is how involved veterans are in taking care of others,” said Miller. “There is no better example than Retired Major Michael Evans and on behalf of Governor Brian Sandoval we are proud to recognize his contributions and proud is part of the Nevada veteran community.”
