Outreach

By Cathy Yates

The NDVS Outreach team has continued to stay busy this fall with events in northern and southern Nevada.  Our Nevada Veterans Advocates are vital to outreach as they volunteer to work at tables at community events across the State allowing us to reach out to more veterans and family members.

Some of the recent events we have participated in include: Roseman Veterans Symposium and Resource Fair in Henderson; Office of Military and Legal Aid Resource Fair at the Reno VA Hospital and at the Las Vegas VA Hospital; Veterans Appreciation Breakfast in Sun Valley; Pahrump Social Pow Wow and the Nevada Women's Expo in Reno.

We also welcome a new Southern Nevada Outreach Director! Evan Rush joined the team on November 26, 2018 and is wasting no time rolling up his sleeves and getting involved.

Rush assisted NDVS Deputy Director of Programs and Services Fred Wagar in presenting a Patriot Employer Program Certificate to the recruiting team of American Homes 4 Rent. American Homes 4 Rent is an internally managed real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on acquiring, renovating, leasing and operating single-family rental homes.

Rush explains one of the company’s recruiters, Zarina Harrison, is proud her father is a veteran. She provided a tour of their operations and introduced Wagar and Rush to the recruiting team, two of whom were military spouses. All 12 recruiters successfully completed the Patriot Employer online course and proudly displayed their certificates during the presentation.

According to Harrison, American Homes 4 Rent has hired approximately 40 veterans nation-wide. Although a modest number, the team expressed appreciation for and understanding of the value of hiring veterans. Their mission is to hire many more veterans in the future.
