Message from the Director – January 2019

Happy New Year!

We are starting 2019 with tremendous enthusiasm, as we’re still flying high from the Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks just last month.

It was a tremendous way to end 2018 and sail into a new year!

We have lots of information to share about the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in this month’s edition of Veterans’ Voice, including: the services provided, becoming a resident, tentative timeline for opening and employment opportunities. Just click here to learn more about this amazing new skilled nursing care facility: https://veterans.nv.gov/benefits-and-services/northern-nevada-state-veterans-home-sparks-nv/

In addition to welcoming this facility for veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents, there are several things you will want to note this month. You won’t want to miss the upcoming Veterans Legislative Summit. The first summit will be held in Las Vegas, January 12, 2019 at the VA Southern Nevada Medical Center Auditorium.  A second summit will be held in Reno, January 26, 2019 at the Washoe County Senior Center multi-purpose room. We partner with the United Veterans Legislative Council to host this event. It is designed to provide summary information from the Legislative Symposia and review current State issues regarding veterans and veteran supporters for the 2019 Legislative Session. For dates, times and registration, click here: https://veterans.nv.gov/2019-nevada-veterans-legislative-summits/

You will also want to “save the date” for March 20, 2019! This date is set aside for Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature in Carson City. It is a day-long event that starts with fanfare, featuring a ceremony with our new Governor and legislative leadership! There will be static military displays, vendors and a free lunch served on the Capitol grounds! For more information, visit: (Link to VAMDAL information)

This month we also have a new Southern Nevada Outreach Director we’d like to introduce. His name is Evan Rush. Be sure to say “hi” to him as he will be out and about attending meetings, gatherings, ceremonies, and community events as well as supporting the Nevada Veterans Advocate (NVA) program. Read more about him here: https://veterans.nv.gov/meet-the-newest-members-of-our-team/

Speaking of the NVA program, we are already planning our free, two-day workshop that will set you on the path to becoming an NVA.  It will be on April 6-7, 2019 at Harrah’s Convention Center in Reno. Learn more or register HERE

As you can see, this year will bring many opportunities for you to get involved and stay involved in serving and supporting the veterans’ community in Nevada.  I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our upcoming events! As always, I thank you for your continued service and support.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
