New Training Available to Become Respite Provider

The Lifespan Respite Program of the Nevada Department and Health of Human Services’ Aging and Disability Services Division has announced a free certification course aimed at adults who would like to become a certified professional Respite Care Provider. Nevada was awarded this Pilot Project to help recruit and promote outreach to the community. The goal of this project is to strengthen and support primary caregivers.

This project will also serve to promote awareness of respite through outreach in the community such as higher education institutions, vocational schools, high school students gearing towards graduation, and anyone who would like to join the efforts of connection of this community and allowing caregivers to participate in freedom, support, and connection.

Respite can be provided in homes, childcare centers, community centers, senior centers, or churches, camps, nursing homes for overnight stays. Caregiving jobs that provide support for individuals with disabilities or older adults include certified nursing assistants, home health aides, direct support professionals, home care aides, and respite providers.

Through participating in this pilot project, DHHS will help connect families in need of respite care by working closely with those that live in the area.  Nevada will be working on a Nevada Registry for respite workers that need to have respite care provider training.  This will be at no cost to sign up or search the registry which will be a resource for all ages from young children to adults.
