Expansion of the VA Caregiver Program

Since the signing of the VA Mission Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs has worked on developing a methodology and support structure to support the eventual expansion of the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. On October 1, 2020, this expansion was launched and makes Veterans who served before May 7, 1975 eligible for the program. The program will be further expanded on October 1, 2022 to veterans who served between May 7, 1975 to September 1, 2001.

Though aspects of the program have changed, it aims to support veterans who have a serious injury which results in a single or combined VA Disability Rating of 70% or more and are in need of in-person, personal care services for a continuous period of a at least six months.

As a result of these changes, NDVS encourages our veterans and caregivers to review our Caregiver Guide for more information on the specifics of the expansions and for local points of contact who can answer questions on the program.
