Join us for Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature

This year, Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature (VAMDAL) will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. If you are not familiar with VAMDAL, this event brings members of the military and veteran communities to the Legislature to interact with their legislators. It involves a morning session on the Capitol grounds, a Concurrent Resolution in the Assembly and Senate honoring our fallen, a luncheon sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, static military displays by the Nevada National Guard, veteran-friendly vendors, and more. The event takes place on the legislative grounds throughout the day.

The day begins with vendors assembling on the Capitol Complex grounds at 6:00 AM. If you wish to become a vendor, click here: https://bit.ly/2FPXt97

Coffee and networking take place near the Veterans Memorial behind the Capitol Building around 8:15 AM.

At 9:00 AM, the opening ceremony features Governor Steve Sisolak, who will be signing legislation, proclamations or executive orders important to veterans. The Nevada National Guard will provide the Color Guard.

This day is set aside in Nevada statute to take place on the third Wednesday in March. It raises awareness and serves as a tribute to Nevada’s military and veteran communities. It provides the opportunity for lawmakers to meet and mingle with those who are currently serving or who have served our country.

Just before noon, the United Veterans Legislative Council (UVLC) pairs selected veterans with lawmakers in the Assembly and Senate. Those veterans are introduced on the floors of both houses. Pageantry surrounds the pairings and it is certainly something you will never forget if you have the opportunity to attend. To be paired and seated with a legislator, contact Mitch Roach at 702-690-6145 or Mitch.roach@aol.com

Last spring, veterans across Nevada gathered together in two symposia, one in Las Vegas and the other in Reno. These participants identified issues important to veterans and their families and then prioritized the importance of the identified issues.

In all, eight themes emerged across the State:

STATE-WIDE THEME 1:  Honor and recognize veteran’s service by reducing certain State fees and taxes

STATE-WIDE THEME 2:  Increase veteran service officer and veteran outreach capacity

STATE-WIDE THEME 3:  Support veteran employment

STATE-WIDE THEME 4:  Expand suicide prevention support and education

STATE-WIDE THEME 5:  Support veterans housing initiatives

STATE-WIDE THEME 6:  Enhance connection to veteran benefits

STATE-WIDE THEME 7:  Honor veterans services

STATE-WIDE THEME 8:  Support veterans courts
