Message from the Director – June 2019

Welcome to Summer and Get Ready for a Busy Couple of Months Ahead!

In northern Nevada, a dedication ceremony for the new Gold Star Families Memorial will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks. We are expecting up to 500 attendees. You’re going to want to save your seat by going here: http://bit.ly/2HSPA1j

If you are a Gold Star family, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Alan Callanan at callanana@veterans.nv.gov or Josh Loftis at loftisj@veterans.nv.gov. The Gold Star Family Foundation is working with NDVS to also bring a Gold Star Family Memorial to southern Nevada. As we receive new information on this southern memorial, we will pass it along – so watch this space!

Speaking of honoring and remembering our fallen military heroes, you’ll be pleased to hear Memorial Day saw tremendous support once again at the Veterans Memorial Cemeteries in Fernley and Boulder City. In both northern and southern Nevada, even the preparation flag-in events prior to Memorial Day brought out hundreds of volunteers. For many, flag-in has become a tradition. June is also PTSD Awareness Month with June 27, 2019 being PTSD Awareness Day. The VA estimates there are some eight million people in the United States with PTSD. While experts note there are many treatments that work, most people with PTSD don’t receive the help they need.  It is hoped this month-long recognition and day of observance will bring light to and understanding that not only are PTSD treatments available, but those treatments work and can lead to a better quality of life. And finally, the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home will admit its first residents this month!

We are so very excited! The new home is just gorgeous. The Administrator, U.S. Army veteran Mike Ball, and his team, are well on their way to creating a home comparable to our amazing 5-Star veterans home in Boulder City.

As always, thank you so very much for your continued support of Nevada’s military community and our veterans and their families. I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events this summer.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
Director
