Message from The Director

The month of April is already shaping up to provide you with numerous opportunities to get involved and stay involved. In Reno, NDVS is offering a free, two day training that will set you on the path to becoming a Nevada Veterans Advocate (NVA). The NVA Conference will be held April 6-7 at Harrah’s in downtown Reno. Continue to “watch this space” as we will be hosting another NVA Conference in southern Nevada later in the fall of 2019.

This month is also the perfect time to nominate a person or organization to receive honor and recognition as Veteran of the Month or Veteran Supporter of the Month. The Veteran Service Commission will review the nominations and make recommendations to the Governor for final selection.

For more information, including eligibility, click here to make your nomination for Veteran of the Month: https://veterans.nv.gov/benefits-and-services/veteran-of-the-month-program/ and here for Veteran Supporter of the Month nominations: https://veterans.nv.gov/benefits-and-services/veteran-supporter-of-the-month/

Speaking of honoring and recognizing veterans and members of our military community, there was tremendous support shown during Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature in Carson City last month.  Governor Steve Sisolak signed an executive order establishing the State of Nevada Veteran Peer Mentor Group. This group will help ensure veterans have the support they need to successfully transition to civilian careers after their service in the military. He also presented two proclamations: one designating the week of March 17-23 as Women’s Military History Week in Nevada and the other declared March 29, 2019 as Vietnam War Veterans Day in Nevada.

Additionally, just this past weekend we saw two independent events aimed at remembering and honoring Nevada’s veterans. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Sierra Nevada Chapter 989, partnered with NDVS and others to host a Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Day and All Veterans Luncheon at the Reno Events Center on March 30, 2019. Also, the City of Sparks held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new veterans’ memorial on Friday, March 29, 2019. The plaza portion of the new Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza is expected to be built by Memorial Day 2019. Once completed, there are plans to make it interactive with kiosks and a smartphone app to provide information and videos. congratulations for the hard work on both aforementioned events.

Finally, Memorial Day is right around the corner and we want to know what your organization or your community has planned for the day. Please send your Memorial Day activities to: loftisj@veterans.nv.gov

We look forward to the month ahead and, as always, thank you for all of your continued support as it really makes a difference in the lives of our veterans and their families.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
Director
