The NDVS Veterans Healthcare Pocket Card educational initiative has officially launched in Elko. This initiative is aimed at educating and informing civilian healthcare partners on the ways to identify veterans and engage with them about their military service to identify military exposures, screen for suicide risk, and connect veterans to resources. The effort includes a pocket card containing a wealth of information and resources for easy use as a reference.
Sarah Hogue, Suicide Prevention Program Manager, and Rachel Jelenic, Healthcare Program Manager, held their first presentation at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital meeting with the heads of various departments.
More than 75 pocket cards were distributed at the hospital and to other community providers to inform and support them in the care of veterans in communities without specific VA resources.
Elko is the first community to receive these pocket cards and the accompanying educational session. Other rural hospitals targeted include Humboldt General in Winnemucca and Banner Churchill in Fallon. NDVS looks forward to taking this initiative statewide as the initiative continues to expand.
If you are a healthcare provider and are interested in implementing the Veterans Healthcare Pocket Card in your organization, please reach out to Sarah (hogues@veterans.nv.gov) or Rachel (jelenicr@veterans.nv.gov) to learn more about the initiative.
