Nevada Veterans will get a chance to speak out and be heard

(Reno, NV)Northern Nevada veterans will have the opportunity this coming weekend to speak out about issues and concerns important to them during a Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposium. This event is a platform to identify and prioritize key areas in the veteran community in preparation for the 2019 session of the Nevada Legislature. Federal issues are brought before Nevada’s Congressional delegation for review and consideration.

Every other year, when the Nevada Legislature is not in session, the Nevada Department of Veterans Services partners with the United Veterans Legislative Council to host a Veterans Legislative Symposia. One session is held in northern Nevada, another is held in southern Nevada.

The Northern Nevada Symposium will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Washoe Senior Center located at 1155 East 9th Street in Reno. Coffee and mingling will start at 8:00 a.m. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. If you would like to attend, save your seat by going here: http://bit.ly/2HoyBmf

In 2016, suicide prevention of at-risk veterans was identified as the number one issue by participating veterans. What emerged was a request for mandated suicide prevention training for those who would most commonly come in contact with at-risk veterans. Other issues that surfaced included increasing the number of Veteran Service Officers in rural Nevada and extending the eligibility period for the Fry Scholarship to ensure all children of those killed in combat are able to use these benefits. Participating veterans also wanted to see an increase in support for Nevada’s Veterans’ Courts.

The 2017 Legislative Session resulted in 26 veteran-friendly bills being signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval. Many of those bills were brought forward through this process.

Following the event in Reno, there will be a Southern Nevada symposium in Las Vegas on March 31st. For more information or to save your seat visit: http://bit.ly/2nB1SSn
